A child does not look at a decoration, they touch it. Anything fragile, glass or high up spends the season being watched — and on the afternoon of the 25th, once the presents are open and there are four hours until dinner, there is nothing left to do.
The deciding factor is how much of the object belongs to the child. A felt tree to decorate and redecorate fills a whole afternoon and starts again the next day; a hat to personalise becomes a classroom or sibling activity. An electronic plush toy, by contrast, is very funny very quickly, then less so.
